After the deaths of the Avengers at the hand of Thanos, War Machine, along with five others, got a message from Iron Man saying they're the new Avengers.
War Machine and Wolverine met up with the other heroes and attempted to stop Thanos. After several failed attempts, War Machine is elected leader and they defeat him, but the Avengers are still dead.
After the funeral, they decide to build a headquarters in space. They refused any new members to join the New Avengers.
